Submitting to the Children’s Map Competition

The ICA’s Commission on Cartography and Children invites entries for the 2017 Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Competition. In this competition, teachers, parents, local coordinators, and young artists first submit entries to a national competition; these national competitions are organized by coordinators and committees specific to their country. After national winners are selected, the first place winners in each age category will be entered to thefinals of the international competition, and announced during the closing ceremonies of the International Cartographic Conference (ICC) in Washington, DC on July 9, 2017.

The Children’s Map Exhibition in Washington is the final round of this competition, and the ICC organizers cannot accept individual submissions. Preliminary national competitions are organized by ICA member nations; winning those competitions qualifies a drawing to advance to the International Exhibit and Competition at ICC 2017. If you are a teacher, parent, local coordinator, or young artist, your first step should be to find out information about your preliminary national competition. Deadlines for these competitions vary, but most are in early 2017. Those countries with websites for their preliminary competition are:
